Photos Are For The Future

Dec 30, 2023

You take photos for tomorrow, not today.

Yesterday was Cindy's (my mother-in-law) birthday, and while I know the stereotypical relationship between a man and his wife's mother is always made to be a contentious one, I've never had an issue with Jackie's mom; she and I have always clicked.

Birthday Reflections

As Cindy celebrated her birthday, and with 2024 right around the corner, it became a good time to reflect on the past and evaluate where we are now and where we're heading in the future.

Capturing moments through photographs is a powerful way to preserve memories for generations to come. The "magic" of capturing time in a picture lies in its ability to evoke emotions and stir our souls, even years later.

Personally, I have always been fascinated by the power of photography, and Cindy has been instrumental in nurturing this interest. She is a talented photographer herself and has been a great teacher, one who has selflessly shared all of her resources and knowledge with me.

I have learned so much from her, and in 2014, she even entrusted me to assist her in photographing a family member's wedding. Little did I know that this would but one of many events I would be covering with a camera in hand.

Photos are not just for us to look at on the day they were taken; they are tangible evidence of the moments we have lived and the stories we have created. They serve as reminders of our experiences and the people we have shared them with.

That's why I believe it's important for everyone to have their photos taken, printed, and shared. Life is too short to forget all the amazing things we have done and the memories we have created.

The birthday celebration was a great reminder of not only where we are as a family but also where we're going.

The jokes and laughter, the micro-interactions that mean more than they're ever appreciated within the moment, the adventures, the memories, the knowing that you've made an impact in the life of one you love so much...

Seeing my son and daughter laugh, love, and share their worldview with their grandmother (Giggy) it's what makes life a wonderful ride, not because of where we are going but because of who we're traveling with.

How can you explain all of that?

How can you tell your children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren about that?

You can't, but a photo can, and the photos you take today will be what tells your story tomorrow. It's one thing to talk about what you did and who you were with; it's a whole different level of storytelling to show it.

So go out and capture the moments; make the time to see people and please, get your picture taken with them.

Cindy can go home and tell people about the family she visited, how we're doing, and the beautiful sunset she saw...

or she can show them.

Which do you think will paint the picture better..?
